Larimar Mines in the Barahona Province
Larimar is a rare blue variety of a semi-precious stone
known as pectolite that is only found in the Dominican Republic.
Its colors can from almost white to deep blue and it an also be light blue
or blue-green. It is most commonly mined in the
Baoruco Mountain Range area of the province of Barahona.
Mines include the Los Chupaderos Mine in Los Checheses, about
6 miles southwest of the city of Santa Cruz de Barahona.
Miners work at depths up
to 700 feet below sea lebvel to mine for Larimar.
Visitors to the Barahona Province can visit Larimar mines
on guided tours and they can also visit local shops to
view the process of cutting and polishing Larimer
and turning it into jewelry that can be purchased.
